USB is getting even better! The USB 3.2 standard has just been announced, guaranteeing transfer speeds doubled compared to the previous version, but also other improvements, particularly in relation to fast charging. For now, only the bandwidth has been the subject of a detailed release by the USB 3.0 Promoter Group.
Benson Leung, a Google engineer, explains on Google+ that a Type-C USBcable contains 15 cables, including 8 SuperSpeed. However, only 4 of them are currently used, the others being reserved for an ” alternative mode ” like the DisplayPort. The USB 3.2 brings the multi-lane , allowing to fully use these 8 cables and thus to double the throughput.
Thus, while USB 3.1 could wait 5 or 10 Gb/s, respectively with Gen. 1 and Gen. 2, the USB 3.2 can reach up to 20 Gb/s, or 25 GB/s .
Of course, the USB 3.2 remains compatible with previous standards. However, to use it fully, it will be necessary to use certified terminals and cables.
